فسیلهای کروکودیل منقرض در ابو الهول کشف شدند
Researchers discovered that the limestone used to build the ancient Abu al‑Hol statue in Giza contains fossils of a newly identified extinct crocodile species, Herugavialis cairensis, dating to 54 million years ago. The species, named after the Egyptian god Heru, was found in the same 4,000‑year‑old quarry that supplied the stone for the statue. The fossil skull, first unearthed in the 1920s, was initially misidentified as a living gharial but CT scans revealed it to be a distinct, extinct species described in Royal Society Open Science. Herugavialis had a long, narrow snout and likely fed on fish, as indicated by abundant fish fossils in the quarry. Gharials were widespread across the globe for about 100 million years, but all Mediterranean crocodiles disappeared roughly 6 million years ago due to drying of the sea.
