Dr. Mehdi Hami, Director General of Veterinary Medicine in East Azerbaijan, says the province’s main veterinary challenge is the mismatch between the number of veterinary graduates and available employment. He notes that the province, with about 3.5 million light and 360–380 k heavy livestock and a leading position in poultry production, faces high disease risk due to its border with Nakhchivan, Armenia, and its position on migratory bird routes. Vaccination coverage is generally good: 21 k dogs against rabies (target 40 k), 105–110 % of the brucellosis target, and ongoing foot‑and‑mouth and HPAI vaccination campaigns. The province has 14 industrial poultry slaughterhouses and 18 livestock ones, all pre‑chilled, and 2,700 veterinary professionals (≈1,050 active, 325 technical officers, 645 in treatment centers, 200 pharmacies). Despite these strengths, Hami stresses a chronic shortage of human resources that cannot be resolved at the provincial level and requires national policy action.
